Li raised his hand. “I volunteer to fly the airplane or to jump out of it.”

“That’s not very environmentally friendly,” Val said. “I may have found a better way. Look!”

Goldie and Li gathered around the computer. They read about the junior fashion show. Contestants could enter one outfit, and the winner would get his or her picture taken with Zada. If she really liked the outfit, she would add it to her spring line.

“Ruby should totally enter,” Li said.

“She can’t.” Goldie pointed to the word junior. “Ruby has been designing and selling her fashions since she was in diapers.”

“And even those diapers were fashionable,” Val added. “I’ve seen the pictures. Denim, fake fur, jewels. All very cool.”

“It’s good that Ruby can’t enter, because I need to win. When I do, I’ll get my picture with Zada. That’s when I’ll personally deliver her invitation!”

“All you have to do is design your own clothes,” Val said.

“I can engineer that!” Goldie took out every marker she owned and started sketching in her graph-paper notebook. She drew buttons and straps. She added pockets. Li and Val watched quietly. Finally, Goldie held up her masterpiece.
